David Hancock

Head, AIR Health Team

MD, PhD

Dr David Hancock is the head of the Advancing Innovation in Respiratory (AIR) Health team at The Kids Research Institute Australia, and a paediatric respiratory physician at Perth Children’s Hospital. David received his PhD in 2013 from the University of Sydney, New South Wales, and his MD in 2016 from Flinders University, South Australia.

David’s primary research interests lie in the utilisation of “big data” approaches to find innovative approaches to diagnose and treat respiratory disease in childhood.

David is one of the lead investigators extending large respiratory cohorts in WA including the MAVRIC (1300+ children with wheezing over 23 years), RHINO (allergic/respiratory outcomes in 2,500+ ORIGINS children), AERIAL (480 children from birth to 5 years), and BANK CF (40,000+ bio samples from children with cystic fibrosis) cohorts.

He also has extensive experience in clinical trials research as the clinical lead of the Respiratory Clinical Trials Group at The Kids, with experience as an investigator on 23 Phase I-IV respiratory clinical trials covering both industry and investigator-initiated trials.

Clinical Predictors of Longitudinal Respiratory Exacerbation Outcomes in Young Hospitalised Children

Respiratory infection and wheezing illness are leading causes of hospitalisation in childhood, placing a significant burden on families and healthcare systems. However, reliably distinguishing children at risk of developing persistent disease from those likely to outgrow their symptoms remains a clinical challenge. Earlier identification would allow clinicians to focus care and resources on those most likely to benefit from long-term management, while reducing anxiety and uncertainty about the future for families.
