Mauricio joined The Kids Research Institute Australia in November 2020, where he is part of the Malaria Atlas Project’s (MAP) Data Engineering team. His focus is on building geospatial solutions using high-performance computing technologies for the purpose of addressing epidemiological research with applications in Malaria, and more recently COVID-19.

Before joining MAP he worked at DUG technology, developing tools to monitor and improve managing the HPC cluster. Prior to that, he worked at Fugro RailData developing software that processes raw 3D laser and GNSS/INS data into various products. He obtained his MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology from the Eindhoven University of Technology and BSc in Physics and Astronomy from Utrecht University.

Estimating the potential malaria morbidity and mortality avertable by the US President's Malaria Initiative in 2025: a geospatial modelling analysis

Since its inception in 2005, the US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) has played a major role in the reductions in malaria morbidity and mortality observed across Africa. With the status of PMI funding and operations currently uncertain, we aimed to quantify the impact that a fully functioning PMI would have on malaria cases and deaths in Africa during 2025. 

Evaluating COVID-19-Related Disruptions to Effective Malaria Case Management in 2020–2021 and Its Potential Effects on Malaria Burden in Sub-Saharan Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to far-reaching disruptions to health systems, including preventative and curative services for malaria. The aim of this study was to estimate the magnitude of disruptions in malaria case management in sub-Saharan Africa and their impact on malaria burden during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used survey data collected by the World Health Organization, in which individual country stakeholders reported on the extent of disruptions to malaria diagnosis and treatment.
